David Vélez, CEO of Nubank, joins the TIME100 list of most influential people in the world

The list, published annually and in its 19th edition, recognizes people who are making an impact in the world.

Nubank was created in 2013 with a mission to fight complexity in the financial system and give people back control over their money. At the beginning of this mission were three people: David Vélez, Cristina Junqueira, and Edward Wible, the founding partners of Nu.

Over the years, both Nubank and the founders have received acknowledgments that help us know we are on the right track. In May 2022, here’s a new one: David Vélez, Nubank’s CEO, is one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.

“This award is a recognition of our collective journey in these last nine years to reach nearly 60 million customers and change the landscape of the financial services sector. I share this acknowledgment with my co-founders and all of our employees, for their relentless work to serve our clients with great products and experiences, give people control of their money, and promote financial inclusion in Latin America.

Thank you to all our customers and shareholders for your trust, and be assured that we are just getting started on this journey – and have a long way ahead”.

The traditional TIME100 list is published annually to recognize the impact, innovation, and achievements of people who are helping to shape the world around them. According to the magazine, the list is “a community of leaders whose energy and commitment, we hope, will inspire others to take action as well.”

Also in 2022, we had already appeared in another list of the magazine – that of the most influential companies in the world, for the second consecutive year. Nu was the only Latin American company to appear in the ranking, joining the Titans category along with companies such as Apple, Disney, and Netflix.

David Vélez at TIME100: customers at the center of everything we do

A Colombian by birth, the triggering moment for David to start a financial institution in Brazil was very simple: moving to the country and realizing how complex, bureaucratic and unfair the Brazilian banking system was.

Along with Cristina and Ed, he laid the foundations for what would become a financial institution that puts customers at the center of everything – from product development to providing caring, humane customer service.

Nubank currently serves almost 60 million people and is present in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.

Our estimate is that we have already saved Brazilians around US$ 1 billion in abusive fees and rescued them from 113 million hours in branch queues. And that’s just the beginning.

To all of our customers: thank you very much for yet another recognition.
